Is there anything more disgustingly and blatantly [dare I say, grossly] hypocritical than a televangelist?
Seriously. How much good are these guys really doing [for anybody other than themselves]? They’ve given Christ a bad name ever since the PTL scandals of the eighties and nineties. You can just flip onto those channels at a random whim and I guarantee that 99.95% of the time, you’ll be getting a hard sell, you’ll hear the words “money,” “prosper[ity]” or “bless[ing/s] and/or you’ll see the gawdiest, most disgusting displays of misplaced wealth the world has ever known! Gold thrones. Big hair. Caked on cosmetics. Bleached teeth. Flashy suits. I’ve even seen a star-shaped pulpit on one of those shows.
And they’re always selling something. Oh, they won’t call it a purchase, because if you sell something the IRS starts to question the validity of your tax exempt NONprofit status. Instead they LIE and say it’s a free gift if you give a “donation” of a certain monetary amount. It’s still commerce [especially because you can’t get the merchandise/gift without the “donation,” even upon special request] no matter how you try to weasel your words about! Worse, they’re still selling snakeoil after all these years: special vials of holy water, blessed hankerchiefs, pieces of the holy cross… whatever it is, it’s guaranteed to bless your socks off, heal you, prosper you or whatever IFFFFFFFFFFFFFF YOU have enough faith. So if the snakeoil fails, it’s all YOUR fault. Wow. And they’ve got to stand before God’s Throne with that.
I’ve got news for all of them: Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. All I hear out of these guys is money, money money. Where your treasure is there your heart is also. It’s clear where their hearts lie: money. You CANNOT serve both God AND money. Jesus said so himself. They’re not prophets of God; they’re prophets of money. Heaven is hypocrite-free, guaranteed by God.
HERE’S THE DIRTY LITTLE SECRET:
We’ve created and continually funded these modern-day moneychangers! Why are we supporting these charlatans? Oh, because they claim they’re spreading the Gospel. They’re spreading something alright, but it ain’t the Gospel! It stinks! The Gospel is being blasphemed because of these hypocrites! You want to support the work of the Gospel? Support a missionary. Support your local outreach. Support your local church. But whatever you do, don’t give another red cent to these fakes! Not one red cent! Do not any longer be a party to their sin!
The sad truth is that they’re telling us what we want to hear. That’s why we fund them.
Awake to righteousness and sin not, for some have not the knowledge of God; I speak this to our shame.
