You’re correct about it being a threat display but this isn’t a Great Horned Owl, its a Long-eared Owl, similar but smaller and very elusive. ^_^ Reply
If so, I apologize. I did not mean to impugn the wrong owl! [My image search identified this as one as a Great Horned Owl. I shall have to keep searching!] In any case, you can still see how an owl in threat display could explain the Mothman as drawn by the eyewitness. -Sirius Knott Reply
Even better would be to know what color the owl’s eye glow when light is shined in them! (The way a cat’s or dog’s eyes reflect light). If its eyes shine red, that would be exactly like the mothman’s glowing red eyes? Reply

Their eyes do shine red… one of these reasons they’re my prime candidate. ;]
